THE WHITE LADY LOVES YOU MORE

I have over 600 CD’s but, for some reason,
I remember the circumstances of buying my first Elliot Smith
album. It was at a Zia Records on Speedway Boulevard in Tucson,
Arizona. Back in those days (1995), MP3’s hadn’t
been invented and I lived beyond the half-mile radius of my
college radio station’s reception. I bought a lot of
music after reading about it and without ever hearing it (because
I was in college and had a lot of disposable cash, after all).
I probably read something about an “an indie Nick Drake
who fuses the Beatles' pop sense with Neil Young's sense of
doom and nimble finger picking” and decided it was for
me. It was, and I bought all of his albums before and after.

| I’m not sure I’ll ever see somebody more beautifully
out of place than Elliot Smith at the Academy Awards singing
“Miss Misery”. According to traditional fan-boy
website tribute etiquette, I should post a song that's an
eerie divination of Elliot Smith’s death or, at least,
a song used during a suicide scene in a Wes Anderson movie.
But I’ll post a happy song instead (which, of course,
he didn’t write it)… |
